Abstract

This study utilizes the semiotics of passions as an analytical tool to uncover the emotional effects realized within poetic discourse, as outlined by Greimas and Fontanille in their renowned book The Semiotics of Passions: From States of Things to States of Mind. Additionally, it functions as a precise method for identifying and interpreting the poet’s underlying emotional states as they manifest in the text.

The central hypothesis of this study asserts that al-Muthaqqib’s poem called “al-Nouniyyah” is an entirely emotional text, saturated with profound and unrelenting passion from its very first verse to its last, regardless of the shifting masks and varying designations within it. This emotion—rooted in the poet’s deep personal suffering and intense anguish—is, in my view, a powerful force capable of transforming human souls and reshaping perceptions. It possesses the ability to influence people, leading them to alter their judgments and beliefs, aligning with Aristotle’s argument in Rhetoric that emotion is the driving force behind human action, shaping both their behavior and thought processes.
