Abstract

The current study seeks to reveal the effect of social comparison on self-esteem between reality and social media. The study relied on the descriptive analysis approach. The case study method was used for 20 cases from two faculties, one scientific (Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences) and the other literary (Faculty of AL- Alsun Languages) at Ain Shams University, to represent the study community. They were selected intentionally, and the study utilized the semi-standardized interview tool to collect data. It is concluded that social comparison is an innate feeling and a biological need, and found that self-respect reflects the Individuals' appreciation and worth, besides their view of themselves in a positive way. The study also showed that the revolution of communication and information technology expanded the concept of comparison after it was limited, and that social comparison in reality is real, limited, tangible, and it is the most influential. On the contrary, social media is fake, wide, and intangible. The study also found that social media played a role in increasing social comparisons with others and affected their respect and self-esteem.  It has been summarized that the most common site for comparisons, especially upward, is Instagram, followed by TikTok Tok and that the upward comparisons affect individuals' self-respect positively.
